Discogs Blog Top 30 most expensive items sold in January 2018

Our analysis of December’s most expensive items sold on Discogs was a bit odd, you know, just because of that real human skull thing. Now it’s time to go back to more common formats (we seriously don’t encourage musicians out there to publish their music in any sort of human remains). Vinyl is king this […]

PledgeMusic News SXSW Special: LYLO Off To The Lone Star State

LYLO were described by influential UK music magazine Clash as ‘almost impossible to define’. In 2015, their debut album Handsome Living put this 5-piece Glasgow band firmly on the musical map and their latest release Post Era, which came out in January on El Rancho Records, has delighted critics and their fast-growing fanbase with its “giddy performances…. dexterous playing, winding song structures and bombastic melodies. These are songs that would thrill in pretty much any style”.

LYLO have partnered with PledgeMusic and their fans to take all this and more to the world’s biggest music festival South by South-West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas this month where they will be performing their very own showcase. Justin Allan of LYLO spoke to PledgeMusic about how this all came about, what it means to them to play their first gig in the USA and a few other things SXSW.

How did you hear about PledgeMusic and tell us about your PledgeMusic project?

“We were turned to PledgeMusic as a great way to raise money for the trip to SXSW after we announced we were playing it, so we are selling a whole load of products/experiences on our page. It’s a great platform for direct activity between artists and those interested.”

The band’s PledgeMusic campaign contains a plethora of experiences and items to delight the LYLO fan – full band house concert, a LYLO guest-list pass for life, exclusive merchandise, an offer by the band to remix your song and even the chance to play the band in a 5 a-side football match! In addition, up for grabs are individually hand painted test pressings of the new LYLO album Post Era (limited to 5 copies). LYLO were aware of SXSW, long before they were invited to play it and the band admit to being honoured by the experience of being asked to play the 3-decade old festival.

What do you know about SXSW and how do you see it?

“We are humbled to go play a prestigious festival, never mind just playing a show in America alone. We’re aware it can bring a lot of opportunities and that there will be an overwhelming amount of people there, but we are just going to take it as it comes, play how we normally would and enjoy our time there for how it unravels. No ridiculous expectations, but we are also going to the hot springs!”

Live performance being the main thrust of SXSW, what makes it for you as a performer on stage?

“I thought about this recently, we have played quite a few shows in London where we have been slowly building a bigger audience with each show. Maybe it feels like you’re trying to prove yourself or something? That can be fun as you get that sensation of giving it everything or presenting yourself and what you’re about – like an introduction. But when we play to people who know the songs and they become part of the song in that moment – that is the most special and humbling feeling. It helps when you play well too!”

Admitting to being a big fan of Bjork – although first record purchased was Robbie William’s ‘Rock DJ’ (no shame in that, a great song in its time – Ed) – Justin cites a general admiration and respect for artists that push boundaries and have a sensibility to and impact on the wider cultural and artistic environment.

PledgeMusic wishes LYLO all the best in having that effect, both in Texas and much further afield in the US.
