'Prometheus, much enlivened by Kirill Gerstein's almost jazzy solo piano, really gets the blood racing.'
This week's free download is Scriabin's Prometheus (Poem of Fire), performed by pianist Kirill Gerstein with the Oslo Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra under the baton of Vasily Petrenko.
The work is loosely based on the myth of Prometheus, who was believed to have created man from clay, and enabled civilisation to progress by stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humanity. Scriabin's work is full of disonance, and is based around a chord Scriabin referred to as 'the chord of the pleroma (referring to divine powers'.
