Mark Kimber Classic Album Sundays Orkney Presents U2 ‘The Joshua Tree’

Classic Album Sundays Orkney celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day with The Joshua Tree by U2. Produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, the album marked a departure from the ambient experiments of the band’s previous full-length, 1984’s The Unforgettable Fire, with a harder hitting rock sound.

Inspired by American tour experiences, literature, and politics, U2 chose America as a theme for the record. Recording began in January 1986 in Ireland, and to foster a relaxed, creative atmosphere, the group primarily recorded in two houses. Several events during the sessions helped shape the conscious tone of the album, including the band’s participation in the Conspiracy of Hope benefit concerts for Amnesty International, the death of roadie Greg Carroll, and lead vocalist Bono’s travels to Central America.

Mark Kimber Classic Album Sundays Manchester Presents Aretha Franklin ‘I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You’ & ‘Lady Soul’

We are kicking off March with a special double bill in tribute to the first Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. We will be featuring full album playbacks of both I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You & Lady Soul.

While the inclusion of “Respect”, one of the truly seminal singles in pop history, is in and of itself sufficient to earn I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You classic status, Aretha Franklin’s Atlantic label debut is an indisputable masterpiece from start to finish. Much of the credit is due to producer Jerry Wexler, who finally unleashed the soulful intensity so long kept under wraps during her Columbia tenure; assembling a crack Muscle Shoals backing band along with an abundance of impeccable material, Wexler creates the ideal setting to allow Aretha to ascend to the throne of Queen of Soul, and she responds with the strongest performances of her career.

Lady Soul is the twelfth studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin, Released on January 22, 1968, by Atlantic Records.

Powered by three hit singles (each nested in the upper reaches of the pop Top Ten), Lady Soul became Aretha Franklin’s second gold LP and remained on the charts for over a year.

Mark Kimber Classic Album Sundays Stafford Presents Amy Winehouse ‘Back to Black’

Amy Winehouse was somewhat of an anomaly within the music biz. Despite topping the pop charts and winning a slew of awards including five Grammy Awards, an Ivor Novello, a BRIT, a MOBO and much, much more, she did not fit into the pop star mold in any shape or form. Her voice, her song writing, her musical style, her visual style and her attitude were far from any X Factor pre-manufactured package. She radiated unadulterated, pure talent.

She was a brutally honest lyricist who could easily move between different sentiments. She was explicit and blunt; funny, clever and smart-ass; sensitive and poignant. “Love is a Losing Game” is up there with the Jimmy Webb classic “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” in the heartbreak category.

Join us to hear the album like never before.

Bobby Hackett

Though he started on guitar, Bobby Hackett (1916-76) made his name on cornet and trumpet, starring with Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller, admired by Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis, in demand for Dixieland and lyrical ballads. Geoffrey Smith salutes a musicians’ musician.
