Being record collectors ourselves, we’ve paid our fair share of hefty sums for long sought after records that were pressed in shamefully low numbers. We were curious to see if anything we’ve purchased ranked amongst the highest priced items that have sold in the Discogs Marketplace since we launched in 2005.

For the sake of maintaining our relationships, we won’t say whether or not any of our purchases made the cut, but we thought you might be interested in seeing this list of the most expensive records sold.

Our criteria includes albums that were actually sold and paid for on Discogs. All prices have been converted to USD based on exchange rates at the time of sale. Duplicates are included – you will notice some albums appear more than once.

Every one of these has a unique story that contributes to them being worth a fortune. We have included a link to each release where you can find release notes that will help shed light on their value.

A few interesting trends we noticed while pulling these stats:

  • 17 bands and musicians appear on this list more than once. Some, like The Beatles, who appear four times, will be familiar to most. Others, like funk group Mistafide, are niche one-hit wonders.
  • The Discogs Marketplace connects buyers and sellers from around the world. 34% of these releases were purchased by collectors using EUR, 33% USD, 27% GBP, 3% CHF, and 3% JPY.
  • 67 unique labels make appearances on this list. The most frequent are Parlophone and Deram, which each notched four appearances.
  • Collectors are not only looking for full albums and 12″ vinyl. There are no fewer than 35 7″ records present.

We’ve talked about this before – heck, we even wrote an article diving into the trend – in-demand records really are getting more expensive.

And if you need any more proof that rare vinyl is getting more expensive, take a peek at what this post looked like when it was first published in 2010.

Do you notice any other interesting trends? Let us and fellow collectors know in the comments. We also publish a most expensive records list each month. You can see all the recent additions here.

If you have any records that you are considering selling, know that you can use Discogs to connect with buyers from around the world. Check out how to use Discogs to price and sell your vinyl records online.

And if you need any more proof that rare vinyl is getting more expensive, take a look at what this post looked like when it was first published in 2010.

_OcieLian_ My Kingdom For A Song: Shakespeare Goes Pop

https://ift.tt/2UenpSD

As the UK is celebrating one of their most famous exports this week, we thought it was time to take a closer look at the pervasive influence of the Bard on popular music. There’s no shortage of references – from lines lifted directly from plays and sonnets, to plotlines reworked and updated for a modern ear.

Shakespeare gave artists, writers, and lyricists plenty to work with. The Bookogs Database currently has over 250 versions of his works, spanning tragedy, comedy, and poetry, published in English, German, Hungarian, Russian, Polish, Portuguese and more.

From a quick glance at this list of songs below, Romeo And Juliet is the ripest source material for songwriters (plus a quick search of the Discogs Database for ‘Romeo and Juliet’ surfaces almost 10,000 releases). The kings (and prince) are pretty popular too, with Richard III, Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth also making a pretty strong showing. The comedies are pretty much shunned, though Dylan branches out into a few of these on occasion.

Notable mentions also go out to Titus Andronicus, named after Shakespeare’s most violent and bloody play, which is basically a whole lot of fighting, cutting off extremities, murdering, baking dudes into a pie and feeding said pie to said dudes’ mother. The mini-album, Now is the Winter Of Our Discotheque by Australian band, Idiot Son should at least get a mention for the clever play on Richard III’s famous opening line, “Now is the winter of our discontent.” And the jury’s still out on whether Missy Elliott’s Work It line, “I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it” was intentionally written in iambic pentameter or if it’s a happy coincidence.

There’s still hope for you if you snoozed through your high school English classes on Shakespeare, fake your way to sophistication by listening to these tunes.

Cemetry GatesThe Smiths

“Ere thrice the sun hath done salutation to the dawn” is (an intentional) misquote of ‘My lord, ’tis I. The early village cock, Hath twice done salutation to the morn.’ from Richard III.
Morrissey goes full pot/kettle in this song where he calls someone else for being pretentiously wordy.

I Am The WalrusThe Beatles

Not the part that goes “oompah oompah stick it in your jumper.” Apparently someone switched on the radio while they were making a sound collage for the fadeout, and caught a broadcast of King Lear. The line “Oh, untimely death…” from Oswald’s death scene struck a chord with Lennon and made its way onto the track.

Romeo And JulietDire Straits

Knopfler penned this after the dissolution of his relationship with Holly Beth Vincent of Holly And The Italians. The lyrics also indicate that he felt used by her to get an edge in her career.

Richard III – Supergrass

More than 400 years after the play was scribed and a decade before his remains were found in a car park in Leicester, Richard III scored the title of this track. While lyrically it doesn’t have much Shakespearean flare to it, the band has been quoted as saying the menacing swagger of the song is a reflection of the car park king, and that’s good enough for me.

Exit Music (For A Film)Radiohead

Thom Yorke was so taken by early footage of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet adaptation that he went and penned this classic straight after seeing Claire Danes put a gun to her head. Lyrically, it’s a pretty close reflection of the plot of the play, with the climax “now we are one, in everlasting peace” a pretty clear reference to the (spoiler alert) double suicide ending.

(Don’t Fear) The ReaperBlue Öyster Cult

Another Romeo and Juliet reference here. As well as naming the R&J, the lyrics allude to a couple whose romance is forbidden but who will be together in the afterlife. While many listeners gleaned a murder-suicide pact from the song, Dharma has stated it’s about eternal love rather than suicide.

That’s EntertainmentJudy Garland

“Some great Shakespearean scene, where a ghost and a prince meet, and everyone ends in mincemeat” Songwriters, Schwartz & Deitz effectively sum up Hamlet is a couple of lines. The song also tidily condenses Oedipus Rex down to “where a chap kills his father, and causes a lot of bother.” If there was ever a question of Judy’s street cred (there wasn’t), we’ve been reassured by Buzz from Melvins.

Bye And ByeBob Dylan

Dylan has often looked to Shakespeare for a little inspiration; Highway 61 Revisited nods to Twelfth Night, Romeo and Ophelia are referenced in Desolation Row, You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go uses the imagery of dragon clouds from Antony And Cleopatra. On Bye And Bye he borrows the line “I’m not even acquainted with my own desires” from As You Like It.

The King Must DieElton John

Elton has a real bone to pick with Shakespearean kings on this track, referencing not one but three. Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and King Lear – all kings who played a little too fast and loose in one way or another and ended up paying big for it.

Get Over ItEagles

“Old Billy was right, Let’s kill all the lawyers tonight.” Henley was sick of people pinning their failures, breakdowns, and problems on other people and paraphrased a line from Henry VI, Part II (“The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”) to make his point.

BanquoThe Futureheads

“All the things we did together must have made your job much harder, surely” A lesser known tune, but a good one nonetheless, written from the perspective of Lord Banquo in Macbeth. Banquo was Macbeth’s best mate but the ruthlessly ambitious Macbeth starts to see him as a threat and has him taken out.

Freya Parr The best recordings of Debussy’s Images

Rating:
0

‘I love pictures almost as much as music,’ Debussy once said, offering a telling insight into his creative life and his remarkable two books of Images for piano. Published in 1905 and 1907, each volume contains three pieces exploring, to coin Debussy’s own phrase, ‘the most recent discoveries of harmonic chemistry’.

Titles suggest a picture or mood for each piece, but these are also joyous explorations of piano sonority and aural colour, earning them a firm place in the keyboard repertoire. There are the evocations of water (‘Reflets dans l’eau’) and bells (‘Cloches à travers les feuilles’) that helped earn Debussy his ‘Impressionist’ label.

But his inspirations are varied: in ‘Hommage à Rameau’ he honours the French Baroque, while ‘Mouvement’ is as abstract as its title suggests. Debussy turns his gaze to the East in ‘La lune qui descend sur la temple qui fut’, but stays closer to home for the concluding ‘Poissons d’or’, which depicts the carp in a Japanese lacquered picture he owned.

The best recording

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano)
Chandos CHAN 10497 (2008)

Debussy expected pianists to follow the letter of his scores. But he also wanted more: an imaginative ear and an ability to interpret the spirit of the music. The best recordings of his Images do both, and with so many excellent versions around, it comes down to personal taste. Both Books have fared well on disc, although it’s a tantalising disappointment that Sviatoslav Richter, Nelson Goerner and Emil Gilels only recorded the first book, and Friedrich Gulda only the second.

But for a complete recording that captures the distinctive character of each Image in excellent sound, and for a truly classy display of pianism, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet is the one to hear. The Frenchman, whose complete Debussy piano works is one of the stand-out recording projects of recent times, plays with the ‘fluid transparency’ of the composer himself, as recalled by his friend and biographer Louis Laloy.

In ‘Reflets dans l’eau’, the surface gleams seductively, like a pool on a hot day, with every ripple and droplet crystal clear. There’s cool suppleness in ‘Cloches à travers les feuilles’ and meditative calm in ‘La lune qui descend’. Bavouzet takes ‘Hommage à Rameau’ a shade too fast perhaps, but does give this sarabande a winning delicacy. And he raises a smile with the quixotic carp, while his fleet ‘Mouvement’, light and precise as Debussy requests, conjures up the image of a whirling spinning-top.

Three more great recordings

Zoltán Kocsis (piano)
Philips Collectors Edition E4757301 (1990)

https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/5mAxBDZC6pdmw8XXJmm3xq

Zoltán Kocsis is alive to every possibility for colour and nuance, varying his pedaling and touch for each piece, each texture, each articulation. Particularly remarkable is the ancient, monumental quality with which he imbues ‘Hommage à Rameau’ – it’s quite different in feel to any other interpretation. The Hungarian pianist’s  ‘Mouvement’ has a restless energy that stills into rapt silence, a parallel to the darting ‘Poissons d’or’ that concludes the work.

It’s all done with such imagination that it would be a shoo-in for best recommendation but for one movement: ‘Cloches à travers les feuilles’. The bells ring clear and true – the most bell-like of any pianist – but the fast tempo isn’t what Debussy asked for, and the various tempo changes seem drastic. But if you can live with it, then this is a wonderful recording.

Noriko Ogawa (piano)
BIS BISCD1105 (2001)

https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/3RuxlnsILAxyaI56RHSB0T

‘Everyone plays my music too loudly,’ said Debussy, while pianist Marguerite Long recalled that ‘his nuances ranged from triple ppp to forte’, and that ‘he only played in half tints, like Chopin, without any hardness of attack.’ Noriko Ogawa isn’t afraid to play quietly in this finely-grained account of Debussy’s Images, with her ‘Reflets dans l’eau’, in particular, painted on a soft canvas. Nor does she short-change the louder end of the dynamic spectrum.

Her approach works to the advantage of the hushed, muffled atmosphere of ‘Cloches à travers les feuilles’, and her delicately etched, beautifully still ‘La lune qui descend’. There’s a certain coolness to Ogawa’s emotional temperature, but she also brings a colourful sparkle and imaginative flair to the music, turning ‘Mouvement’ into a flurried blur and luxuriating in ‘Poissons d’or’.

Ivan Moravec (piano)
Vox CDX5103 (1983)

https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/6NrIZddt0A6g14MmybxuTa

The great Czech pianist Ivan Moravec is renowned for his Chopin playing, and he is also wonderful in Debussy, bringing to it silky tone, liquid line and immaculate pedalling. Those qualities are ideal for ‘Reflets dans l’eau’, which glides by languidly but precisely; perhaps a degree more flexibility would have met Debussy’s tempo rubato marking.

But in ‘Cloches à travers les feuilles’ Moravec hits on a tempo that feels natural, allowing the bells to sing through the exquisitely judged layers of sound. He is elegant and nimble in ‘Mouvement’; indeed, throughout he plays with poise and refinement, though never at the expense of colour or life. There’s a buoyant spring to his ‘Poissons d’or’, contrasting with the internal stillness that the music coalesces around in ‘La lune qui descend’.
